Monsieur sneaking Gallantly into Brest’s sculking Hole W Richardson, c1778. Etching with engraving. NMM PAD4791

This anonymous etching offers an optimistic view of British achievements at the Battle of Ushant in July 1778, which the inscription describes as a mere opening shot – a ‘preliminary salutation’ from Jack Tar to his old enemy. Subsequent British victories ensured that the image of the British tar, shown here wielding a cat-o’-nine-tails at a farting French sailor, would become far more prominent during the next three decades.
